The Fable of Blue

Indigo is to Rajasthan what sapphires are to Kashmir — precious, ancient, deeply woven into identity.

I · The dye

For three thousand years the indigo vat has been tended the same way: leaves fermented, lime added, cloth dipped and lifted into air where green turns, in seconds, to blue. We buy from one family of dyers outside Jaipur and reserve each lot.

II · The block

A block begins as a drawing and ends as sheesham wood, carved by hand to a depth of three millimetres. Our carver has cut blocks for forty years. Each signature block is retired with its edition.

III · The stitch

Tagai is the running stitch that holds a razai together: cotton fill between two printed cloths, worked by hand in parallel lines. It is slow. A king quilt takes a quilter three days.

Nothing we make is finished in less than a month. We would like it to last for fifty years.
